RHINEBECK RENOVATION PROJECT

This renovation/restoration was a multi-year, multi-phase project that was completed while the owners remained in the house.  It was the most challenging and satisfying project completed to date.

The original structure was a two-story, two-wing stable/carriage house built with Federal style architecture in 1902-04.  It was part of the Schuyler Estate of Rhinebeck.  The residence is approximately 7000 square feet.

This house was featured in the Summer 2009 issue of Hudson Valley Home Magazine, Summer 2009, "A Classic Conversion"  and most recently featured in the Winter 2009 issue of Renovation Style Magazine, "Stable Life".

The project included many unusual features such as:

  • Simulated slate tile roofing with copper flashings and a combination of built in and 1/2 round copper gutters.  There is also a 10'x12' vented skylite and a custom built 4'x5' vented, copper roofed cupola.
  • Custom-made simulated divided lite Marvin windows, including 1/2 round windows.  Some of the exterior doors are custom made 1/2 round mahogany doors.  Other exterior doors are double French doors installed after cutting through the 18" thick brick exterior.
  • The floors are either 2" blue stone over radiant-heated concrete or 6" tongue and groove white oak over radiant-heated subflooring.
  • The walls are finished drywall with wood-paneled wainscoting or feux finished plaster.
  • The ceilings are plastered flat, plastered, barrel, pickled white oak or painted coffered/trey.
  • There are two new white oak staircases.
  • All the electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems are new.
  • There are two new porticos with standing seam copper roofs.
